Outing with your baby

There’s almost nowhere the two of you can’t go together. When you feel up to taking him on a little trip, you’ll want to be prepared for any baby mishaps. But don’t go overboard and weigh yourself down with unnecessary paraphernalia. Here’s what you’re likely to need: For an afternoon outing • Extra clothing: Take along a complete change of clothing, including socks.

• Diapers: Plan on packing one diaper for every three hours you’re away from home, plus one extra.
• Diaper wipes: You know why you need them. But besides dirty diaper detail, wipes allow you to clean yourself up before handling baby.

• A plastic storage bag: Place used diapers and wipes in here.
• A pacifier
• A hat
• A towel or cloth diaper: You’ll need something to hold under baby’s chin when you burp

Formula and bottles if bottle-feeding?

You can pour prepared formula into bottles and transport them in an insulated bag. Or pour sterilized water into bottles at home; pack the water-filled bottles and powdered formula separately, then mix a batch of formula whenever your baby needs a feeding. For a newborn, plan on two to four fluid ounces of formula for every two to three hours you’ll be away from home.?

To maintain your energy, pack one or more of the following: apple, banana, nutrition bar, pretzel, dried fruit, bagel, cracker, rice cake, or fruit juice. For an overnight stay In addition to everything listed above, your baby will need: Extra outfits Pack at least two clean outfits for every day you’ll be away from home plus one extra. If you’re flying, put at least a day’s worth in your carry-on luggage.

• Extra booties• Pajamas What about the weather? Check on the forecast before you leave home and you’ll be even better prepared for an outing with your baby. Depending on the current weather and the forecast, you may want to pack these items as well:

• Extra blanket and heavy hat

Use these to cover your baby’s ears if it’s cold or windy. • Sunblock Take along a sunblock recommended for your baby’s age and an umbrella or other protection to keep your baby out of the sun if it’s hot and sunny. Use sunblock on overcast days, too–without protection baby can get badly sunburned even when the sun isn’t shining.
